Taking my mother to Rome: seeing someone else's dream come true
For years, Rome was never really my dream.
But it was hers.
My mother is deeply Catholic, and for as long as I can remember, visiting Rome felt almost mythical to her.
One of those places people talk about with hope, but never with certainty.
Life happened.
Work happened.
Distance happened.
And somehow, years went by.
Then, after moving to Germany and building a life far away from home, an opportunity appeared.
She came to visit me in Berlin for the first time.
And together, we went to Rome.
Traveling is different when you're not the main character
I've traveled before.
I've seen beautiful places.
Taken pictures.
Crossed destinations off a list.
But this trip felt different.
Because I wasn't looking at Rome.
I was looking at her looking at Rome.
Her excitement.
Her curiosity.
The way she stopped to admire things I might have walked past.
The joy in simple moments.
And I realized that seeing someone else experience their dream can be even more fulfilling than experiencing your own.
Some things are bigger than tourism
It wasn't about monuments.
Or restaurants.
Or itineraries.
What I remember most are the small moments.
The conversations.
Walking together.
Watching her take everything in.
Realizing that this place she had imagined for decades was finally real.
And realizing that I was lucky enough to be there with her.
Building a life means more than building a career
Moving abroad changed many things.
It gave me opportunities.
A career.
Experiences I could never have imagined.
But moments like this remind me that success means very little if it cannot be shared.
Because at the end of the day, some of the most meaningful things we do aren't for ourselves.
They're for the people we love.
Practical takeaway
I used to think dreams were personal.
Now I think some dreams are borrowed.
And there is something beautiful about helping someone you love reach a destination they thought they would only ever see in photographs.
Seeing Rome was wonderful.
But seeing my mother's dream come true was even better.
